
Kula Hospital is historically significant for its place in Hawaiian healthcare history, and particularly for
the treatment of tuberculosis. Founded in 1909 as the Maui County Farm and Sanitarium, the
hospital is located at the 3,000 foot elevation level on the slopes of Haleakala. In addition to
tuberculosis, care, programs added include the 22 bed Kula General Hospital completed in 1935, an
emergency room and outpatient clinic as well as the first known preventive health care facility in the
Territory known as the Kula “Preventorium”. Many of today's community members were born or
received surgical services in the hospital. The art deco/morderne five story building completed in 1937 was designed by renowned Hawaii architect, Charles William Dickey and was designated on the
National Register of Historic Places in 2003. Today Kula Hospital is a Critical Access Hospital with 5
acute care beds, 99 SNF/ICF beds, 9 ICF/MR beds, a 24 hour emergency room and outpatient clinic
with lab and x-ray services. Kula Hospital employs 193 staff including 5 physicians and 2 contracted
clinic based physicians. |
